HB-S automotive high-performance snow blower


The blower head is driven by 2 diesel engines.

Each blower engine is fitted with a pneumatically operated coupling. These couplings connect the blower engines to the blower head. In the power train, manual gearboxes – each driven by a cardan shaft – are seated behind the couplings. Each blower engine (fitted on the right and left) has two speed ranges for snow blowing, an idle gear and a reverse gear for emptying the blower wheel after obstruction of the ejection chute.

A turbocharged, intercooled diesel engine is fitted as the drive motor for the vehicle drive.
The Voith turbo gearbox has a converter gear as the first speed range and two coupling gears as the second and third speed ranges. Upon starting, the necessary high torques are generated in the converter gear. At higher speeds, the output of the drive motor is efficiently transmitted in the coupling gears.


A retarder is integrated in this turbo gearbox, which acts as a dynamic brake (see also brake system). 

The waste heat accumulating in the turbo gearbox is dissipated to the cooling system of the drive motor via a heat exchanger.


From the gear exit of the turbo gearbox the torque is transferred to the crawler transfer gear through the cardan shaft. In addition to the pneumatic brake system, the HB-S railway snow blower features a retarder integrated in the turbo gearbox. The retarder is controlled electrically and relieves the shoe brake considerably during long hill descents.


On the transfer gearbox, 2 speed ranges can be shifted as driving gear and crawler gear. Shifting takes place pneumatically at standstill. This gearbox is equipped with cardan shaft flanges at the front and rear. The two bogies are driven by the transfer gearbox via cardan shafts. The drive acts continuously on all 4 axles.
