50 Years of Terratrac: Aebi Celebrates an Original

Half a Century of Terratrac: At Alp Blüemlisberg, Aebi, together with market partners and the media, looked back on the history of a machine that has had a lasting impact on work on steep slopes.

At the foot of these two legendary mountains, Aebi Schmidt hosted an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Terratrac. The event showcased how practical experience, technical curiosity, and close collaboration with users gave rise to a vehicle concept that continues to be refined to this day. The highlight of the dealer and press event was the world premiere of the new Aebi TT 212—and with it, a glimpse into the next chapter of Terratrac’s history.

A Celebration for the Terratrac Family

Alp Blüemlisberg provided the perfect setting for an anniversary closely tied to mountain farming throughout the Alpine region. Swiss market partners, international dealers, and media representatives gathered on July 7, 2026, to look back on 50 years of Terratrac and, at the same time, look ahead to the future. Some dealers traveled over 2,000 kilometers for the event—the longest journey was from Sweden to Alp Blüemlisberg. For dealers from Austria and South Tyrol, a separate event followed on July 8, featuring a dealer evening at the Aebi Schmidt Austria facility in Inzing, Tyrol.

Barend Fruithof, CEO of the Aebi Schmidt Group, welcomed those in attendance and emphasized the importance of the Terratrac for Aebi and the Aebi Schmidt Group. In his speech, he expressed special thanks to the dealers. Their close relationship with customers, their understanding of the market, and the knowledge they gain from daily use have contributed significantly to the Terratrac’s ongoing development over five decades.

From the Idea to the Terratrac

Aebi celebrated 50 years of the Terratrac on the alp, but the story began even before the launch of the first Terratrac in 1976. The Aebi company was exploring ways to make heavy agricultural work easier, more efficient, and safer.

As early as 1912, the company had already attempted to reduce physical strain and increase area productivity with its Aebi automatic mowers. Further experiments and developments followed, including the HM96 hay baler in the early 1970s.

Two technical ideas ultimately led to the breakthrough for the first Terratrac concept: One was the Terra tires, which the Aebi family discovered during a trip to America and integrated into the new machine design. The other idea was to adapt a drum mower from a tractor to the Terratrac, thereby replacing the cutter bar. This combination of soil-conserving tires, excellent hill-climbing ability, and new mowing technology made the Terratrac a practical vehicle concept.

In 1976, the time had come: With the first Aebi Terratrac TT 77, a vehicle was launched that had been developed specifically for use on slopes. Compact, maneuverable, safe, and powerful—qualities that still form the core of the Terratrac’s DNA today.

Since the first TT 77, the Terratrac has undergone continuous development across numerous model generations. Increased power, continuously variable transmissions, all-wheel steering, improved visibility, stronger lifting mechanisms, and modern control systems have expanded its capabilities in mountain farming and municipal applications. Throughout this time, the Terratrac has always remained true to its core philosophy: to be a reliable and safe machine for demanding applications. Several historic models on display at Blüemlisberg illustrated this evolution, showing how the concept has changed over five decades—and how consistently Aebi has carried it forward.

The New Aebi TT 212: The Next Chapter

With the world premiere of the new Aebi TT 212, the focus was deliberately set on the future. The model succeeds the proven TT 211+ and marks an important developmental step in the small Terratrac series.

The TT 212 is based on a completely newly developed vehicle platform. New axles, a new suspension concept, decoupled mounting of the engine and cab, robust braking technology, a modern drive system, and significantly increased lifting forces provide greater performance reserves and more comfort in daily use. At the same time, the TT 212 remains compact, maneuverable, and designed for safe operation on slopes.

50 Years of Experience—and a Clear Vision for the Future

The event at Alp Blüemlisberg demonstrated that the Terratrac is more than just a product. It is a piece of Aebi history, an essential tool for many users, and an example of how technical development arises from real-world experience.
