Driven by Dreams: Art Inspires Cleaner Streets in Astana

In Kazakhstan’s capital city, schoolchildren were invited to put their ideas for a better urban life on paper – and many of them expressed a shared wish: a cleaner city. Some of these colourful drawings have now found an unexpected home — on a street sweeper.

A brighter city as a shared goal

Astana, located in the heart of Central Asia, is a rapidly growing city. Like many expanding urban centres, it faces challenges when it comes to shaping attractive and functional public spaces. As part of a city-wide school project, schoolchildren were asked to illustrate how they imagine the city’s future. A recurring theme in their drawings: the desire for a clean and well-kept environment.

A collaborative project with a strong message

In May, our local partner Stahlbau handed over five Schmidt Street King 660 sweepers to the city – including one with a very special design. Selected children’s drawings were applied directly onto the vehicle. Since then, the sweeper has been out on the streets every day — fully functional and sending a strong visual message.

Art that moves the city

For the children, seeing their artwork brought to life on a working city vehicle is something truly special. This project demonstrates how technical solutions and local engagement can go hand in hand – in this case, through the collaboration between Stahlbau, the city of Astana and local schools.
