How Twente Milieu prepares for any winter weather with SDW training

Twente Milieu is responsible for keeping roads and cycle paths safe in several municipalities, including Almelo, Borne, Hengelo, Enschede, Haaksbergen and Hof van Twente. With around 150 employees actively involved in winter service, it is crucial that these teams are well prepared and knowledgeable to ensure safety on the roads.

To support this, Aebi Schmidt provided the Specific Expertise Winter Service (SDW) training on site at Twente Milieu. The SDW training helps drivers operate spreaders and snowploughs optimally, resolve breakdowns on the road themselves and ensure safety on the road - even in challenging conditions. The programme is fully tailored to Twente Milieu's fleet of vehicles, making the knowledge directly applicable in daily practice.

"Winter road maintenance is an emergency deployment with great responsibilities," says Rob Kersten, Head Coordinator Winter and Emergency Service. "Our drivers often work under difficult conditions, so it is essential that they know how to operate the machines correctly and how to act in case of any breakdowns."

Theory and practice hand in hand

The training combined theory with practical exercises. Special attention was paid to emergency operation of spreaders, safe operation of snowploughs and troubleshooting on the road.

"Previously, if a spreader malfunctioned, it often had to go back to the workshop. Thanks to this training, our drivers now know how to act on the road, ensuring continuity of winter service," Kersten said.

The programme was very well received. Drivers stressed that the knowledge is directly applicable and that the training really helps them further in their daily work. "This was a course where our drivers really felt: we have learned something from this," Kersten adds.

Ready for any winter scenario

Besides safely handling icy roads, the training also covered snow situations - such as mounting and operating a snow plough - skills that are especially valuable for younger drivers. By offering the training on site and tailoring it to the vehicle fleet, Aebi Schmidt and Twente Milieu ensure that winter service teams are well prepared, flexible and professional, whatever the weather conditions.
