Gatwick Airside – Driving a Sustainable Future with Schmidt

Every day, hundreds of aircraft take off and land at London Gatwick Airport – one of the busiest single-runway airports in the world. Behind the scenes, a highly coordinated airside operation ensures that every movement on the ground is safe, efficient and increasingly sustainable. A key part of these operations lies in the equipment from Aebi Schmidt that keeps the airfield safe and operational every day.

Keeping Airside Operations Running

Airfield teams at Gatwick handle a wide range of tasks, from aircraft marshalling and wildlife management to environmental response and FOD clearance. Quick reaction times and reliable equipment are essential.

Spillages, runway debris and environmental incidents can occur at any time. In such situations, teams must respond immediately to eliminate risks and keep airport operations running safely and on schedule.

"We required a supplier who could provide reliable machines and offer UK-based engineers available at a moment’s notice to repair the vehicles and get them back into operation," says James Croydon, Aerodrome Operations Manager at Gatwick Airport.

The focus was not only on capable machines, but also on finding a partner able to support the airport’s operations and long-term sustainability goals. This approach helped shape Gatwick’s fleet renewal.

"We were looking to build our new fleet on the basis of a strong working relationship and move forward together into the future," Croydon adds.

The Right Fleet for Today – and Tomorrow

During the fleet renewal, sustainability played a central role in the decision. For Gatwick it’s not only about today’s solutions – it is about preparing for the next generation of technology.

"Gatwick Airport is committed to being Net Zero by the year 2030 and a key part of our fleet replacement programme was not only what Aebi Schmidt could provide now – but also what they could provide in the future."

This forward-looking approach includes integrating electric machines such as the Schmidt eSwingo 200+ and the eCleango 550, helping the airport reduce emissions while maintaining high operational standards.

In addition, Aebi Schmidt developed one of the first fully electric airport sprayers in close collaboration with Gatwick Airport – the Schmidt eASP – marking an important step in bringing electrification to this application.

"We wanted to work together with Aebi Schmidt and make sure that if there’s an EV vehicle available, Gatwick Airport will be the first to have it operating on the airfield," Croydon explains.

Through close collaboration, Gatwick is continuously exploring new technologies that support safer, cleaner and more efficient airside operations.
