After a construction period of just ten months, Peter Spuhler, the majority shareholder of Aebi Schmidt Holding AG, together with the President of the Municipal Council Elisabeth Zäch and other guests, was able to celebrate the topping out of the new Aebi factory in Burgdorf. In spite of delays due to the hard winter, the factory was built on schedule. At present the fitting out of the interior of the building is proceeding at full speed, so that the move into the building can take place this year as planned. The investment in the new building totals CHF 28 million. It is a clear acknowledgment of the workplace Switzerland and a long-term securing of the location in Burgdorf.

Preservation of the workplace in Burgdorf

During her speech, Elisabeth Zäch, President of the Burgdorf Municipal Council, expressed her delight about the clear acknowledgement of the location in Burgdorf. „I am delighted that in spite of the economic crisis, the 200 jobs in Burgdorf could be maintained.“ Just some three years ago the future of the tradition-steeped Aebi & Co. AG was uncertain. Then Peter Spuhler together with a Swiss group of companies took over as the majority shareholder with Aebi & Co. AG, in order to merge it with the German Schmidt Group. This resulted in the forming of a powerful group of companies active in the fields of agricultural, public works sector and winter service vehicles, which also in the future will be able to survive against the hard international competition.

Peter Spuhler and Hans Peter Bösiger, owner of the firm of architects Giraudi und Partner Architekten AG, thanked the numerous construction experts and tradesmen participating in the ceremony for achieving the topping off on schedule in spite of the hard winter. For Peter Spuhler this new factory has great significance: „A modern and high performance infrastructure is essential for us to survive in the hard-fought international competitive environment.“

Imposing new factory

The chief factor in the decision to construct a new factory was the partially antiquated and restricted accommodation in the more than 100 years old Aebi premises on the Lyssachstrasse in the centre of the town. At the same time a building lease was secured on a parcel of land on the Buchmatt industrial estate just 1 km from the old site. In the meantime the new building with assembly halls, modern accommodation for the development, technical customer service and the administration departments has from the outside virtually reached its final state. In this optimised environment the Aebi specialist vehicles will in future be developed and efficiently manufactured using state-of-the-art production methods.

The company’s building consists of three stories including the basement and has been built as a hall using modular construction on a 27,000 m² parcel of land. The building is 175 metres long and 64 metres wide. The complete building complex will be heated using an environmentally friendly water/water thermal heat pump.
